Goldman Sachs' newest tech fellows have these traits

High performing technologists at investment banks aren't necessarily managing directors. Banks have other titles to differentiate their top performing engineers. Goldman Sachs, for example, has technology fellows. It's just promoted a new class of these elite engineers and several have things in common.

Included in the 2024 fellows are two New York-based AI specialists; Giovanni Faonte, global head of GenAI solutions in the bank's core engineering team, and Vishal Bhandare, a chief architect of data and AI platforms in its investment banking division. Chen Pingping, another new fellow, is Goldman's APAC head of applied AI, using the tech in an algorithmic trading context. 

Many of Goldman's incumbent fellows are also working with AI. Rahul Sharma, another technology fellow and the head of Goldman's AI platform, was a part of the bank's 2024 partner class. Dinesh Gupta, also fellow and partner at the bank, has been the global head of artificial intelligence and digitization since 2022. Mithun Azhagappan, a 2020 fellow, is currently head of AI partnerships for the bank's AI platform. 

Goldman went against the grain earlier this year when it released its AI report, 'Too Much Spend, Too Little Benefit.' The bank's head of equity research Jim Covello said he "struggle[s] to believe that the technology will ever achieve the cognitive reasoning required to substantially augment or replace human interactions." Not all are so pessimistic; CIO Marco Argenti likened GenAI's impact to the invention of the printing press.

Goldman's current GenAI use cases are all around productivity. For example, it uses AI to help engineers write code and decipher code from engineers that have left the firm.

It's not all about AI among Goldman's new fellows. Mark Perkin, head of engineering for Goldman's GS Accelerate platform, is the first tech fellow in Goldman's new Birmingham office. John Gorry, another new fellow, is a cloud data lead for Goldman's transaction banking team TxB. Japan-based fellow Miki Horiuchi works as a VP in Goldman's Electronic Trading Platforms (ETP) team.
