Remote jobs in fintech: down at Stripe, way up at Coinbase

Remote jobs are far more available in fintech than they are in other areas of financial services, but not all fintechs are embracing remote work.  Starling Bank, Marshmallow and Brex have all asked staff back into the office. Stripe also seems to be embracing in-office work. Crypto exchange Coinbase is going the other way.

Last May, we looked at a number of fintechs offering remote work, looking at what proportion of their total jobs were available remotely. We've looked again at that proportion for roles listed today; most companies are largely the same, with two notable exceptions.

As we've noted in the past, Crypto exchange Coinbase has massively ramped up its remote working capabilities, and more than four fifths of its total jobs are available remotely. This is up from 42% when we looked in 2024.

Coinbase also announced a change to its remote policy last month, introducing quarterly 'surges'. Now, remote employees will be expected to spend roughly one week every quarter at a "unique and intense IRL session" with their fellow remote workers.

Conversely, Stripe appears to have scaled back on its remote hiring; the proportion of remote roles has fallen by over ten percentage points to just 30% since we last looked. According to Fortune earlier this year, ~40% of Stripe's employees worked remotely, slightly up from 30-40% in 2023; the current dip in remote roles may be cyclical.

Stripe founder John Collison famously said at the 2023 Sifted Summit that Stripe's sentiment towards remote work hasn't changed, despite shifts in the global consensus. At the time, he said Stripe was more pro-office than most, but as the tides shift once again, things may be different; in response to Jamie Dimon's famous rant about the ineffectiveness of remote work, Collison said on the All In podcast earlier this year that Stripe has some "outrageously productive remote people" who are "coding up a storm" from their isolated cabins in Idaho.

Which fintech companies are remote-first?

Not included in the table above are remote first fintechs, where all roles are considered remote unless specified otherwise. These fintechs are the minority, but there are some notable examples, including:

  • Revolut
  • Kraken
  • Ripple
  • Circle
