"Internal mobility at my bank is just an excuse for favoritism"

I have spent eight years working for a major British bank and now I have lost my job. I feel that I've been treated unfairly and that the internal mobility scheme was a kind of scam.

In the last year, I was working in a team where I had issues with my boss. When I was laid off, it was the result of these office politics. And when I applied internally for other roles, those politics seemed to remain an issue. 

Although I made a lot of internal applications, I received no responses and no feedback. And yet I saw other people from my team picked up elsewhere. 

It seemed to me that everything about the internal mobility scheme was based on favoritism. There are people in the bank who see themselves as king or queen-makers, and they love to recommend their favorite people for jobs in other teams. 

I also think it's far easier to move into another team if you're female. Because most businesses are short of women, when a woman moves it seems that she is far more likely to be accepted into a new team. It's very unfair; everything is engulfed in politics.

    LOL, I feel like I am reading about myself 10 years ago. Trust me, getting laid off is the best thing to happen to you. Get a better job and don't look back. Look at it as a sign that God has something better in store for you...Personally, I got a temp job at another bank through a temp company learning something different for a year and a half which propelled me back to top banks having significantly better jobs. Try the temp route first if you don't find a permanent job. Dont cry about it. Move on

    I relate to your situation, it is unfair. Given the amount of time and pressure on diversity and inclusion, for all intends and purposes men and women are in two different boats when it comes to career progression.


    My best advise - be the best you can be and improve your SME skills and managing up.


    I know a top British bank where not hiring a woman for any Director Level role requires a justification. It appears the quota has not been achieved yet. This is the hiring procedure. At MD level there are quotas. Defiantly not meritocratic and the difference is seen.


    Coming from Eastern Europe where me and my parents had to queue for bread and butter, I don't think is necessary to tell you where quotas of any kind take a society.


    When you ignore competence, there is just so much hiring you can do before things start to break.
