Goldman Sachs hired an AI infrastructure investment banking MD from SMBC
The health of AI infrastructure businesses has been in question over the last few weeks, but that hasn't stopped banks from building out their AI infrastructure banking teams. Goldman Sachs just hired a senior banker from SMBC specialising in the financing arrangements for AI companies as the spotlight on firms like CoreWeave only gets brighter.

Joseph Servi joined Goldman Sachs this month as a managing director in New York for AI infrastructure investment banking with a focus on data centres, GPUs and fiber optics. He spent the last two years at SMBC as co-head of its asset-backed securities (ABS) division as well as head of digital infrastructure and esoteric ABS origination. The role involved packaging the assets of AI infrastructure firms into securitized bonds or other products that are sold to investors. It's not clear exactly what his new role at Goldman will entail; the bank declined to comment.
Servi also previously worked in private equity as a principal with KKR working on structured capital markets for its digital infrastructure team.
Data centre ABS is a booming field; Barclays Research reported in July that outstanding issuance had grown to $61bn in 2026, up from $4bn in 2020. Some AI firms are instead using their assets as collateral for loans. CoreWeave raised $8.5bn earlier this year backed by its chips and a contract with Meta. As scrutiny of these firms increases, the need to package their financing arrangements well may become more important.
