It's understood that Millennium has poached Alborz Elizei, a quant from a team run by Gilles Morihain. Elizei is understood to have been one of Morain's profitable portfolio managers and Millennium is said to have hired him away.
Millennium and Cubist declined to comment.
Ross Garon, Millennium's global head of quantitative strategies, himself joined from Cubist in 2020 and may already be very familiar with Elizei and his skills.
Elizei spent 11 years at Cubist and previously worked for SAC Capital, where Garon coincidentally worked too. Prior to that, Elizei was a junior quant at SocGen in Paris, where his Cubist boss Morihain was head of the statistical arbitrage group. Morihain moved to Cubist in 2012; Elizei joined in 2014.
It seems, therefore, that Morihain has supported Elizei's career until now. His protégé has escaped to work with Garon instead.
