A Goldman Sachs VP escaped to a fine job at hedge fund Brevan Howard

Carlos Licon had a good time at Goldman Sachs. In his own words, his time at the firm was an "amazing journey full of lessons and learning" and he met a lot of good people along the road.

Despite this, Licon has taken himself off on a new journey to a hedge fund. He is joining Brevan Howard in New York City and will be a portfolio manager. At Goldman Sachs Licon was just a vice president (VP). However, he had been a VP there for nearly six years and so was presumably ready for something new.

Licon specialises in emerging market macro trading. He is Mexican and his Goldman journey also involved a geographic transition between Mexico City and New York. Goldman's London emerging markets equities team has also shown a strong tendency to leave for hedge funds. 

Brevan Howard started out as a macro focused hedge fund but diversified into other strategies in 2018. London-based partner Claire McCathie runs Brevan's emerging markets fund and has been strengthening its team. Arturo Charleston, an economist focused on Latin America joined last year, and Juan Pablo Solorzano Margain, a former head of Latin American research at Schonfeld, joined nearly three years ago.

Licon could possibly have made MD at Goldman Sachs if he'd waited. But the next year is 2027, so maybe the wait was too long.
