Retail Banking

Working in retail banking, you'll be based in a city center or local bank branch, providing services to retail customers. In the United States, some of the biggest retail banks (who are, arguably, the best to work for) include JPMorgan, Citi, and Bank of America, while the Royal Bank of Canada takes the top spot across the border.

Entry Level Retail Banking

There are a large number of entry level positions in retail banking, particularly in terms of bank tellers and customer service. While some level of financial training, and an interest in finance, is advantageous, the best possible way to excel in this field is on the job. As a bank teller or customer service agent, you'll be required to have an overview of all services offered by the bank, and the bank's processes. You'll need to know a little about a lot. You should be able to handle front line support, but are not expected to delve deeper into specific practices unless you have a particular interest, or are looking to build a more niche career.

Specialist Niches

For those with more experience, or a strong financial background, there are specialist areas within retail banking in which you can work, such as offering mortgage advice, working in lending, managing the forex desk, handling investments, and being involved in cross-border banking. Some retail banks will also offer a number of specialist services such as stockbroking, where there's a definite need for employees with a specific set of skills and experience.

Account Management

Retail banking is very diverse, and if you're looking to carve yourself out a career in private banking or wealth management, working in a local bank branch as an account manager is a good place to start. While bank tellers deal with the needs of the everyday customer, account managers will be assigned a number of clients with greater wealth and larger portfolios. The funds you're dealing with won't be extravagant, but they will require more expertise to manage than standard accounts belonging to the middle classes, for example.
