Investor relations are vital to all large businesses, particularly those that are listed - it is the job of the public relations staff to help the business demonstrate a strong and consistent outward image,  and also to ensure that financial news stemming from the business is communicated to the right people, which will include stockholders, as well as international media. Where the listed business is a bank, the role of investor relations has been particularly demanding of late, rebuilding the trust that had become tarnished in the financial crisis.

Internal vs. External PR

In investor relations for banks, you will either be employed directly by the bank itself, or by a third party PR company which speaks on behalf of the bank. Both types of roles are advertised on efinancialcareers.com. So which is better? Internal PR or external PR?
The answer really depends upon your knowledge and interest in the financial sector, and your own personal preferences. Working internally, you'll be required to have a strong interest in finance, a good overview of internal processes and of the current market, plus be particularly news savvy with regard to the bank itself. The type of information you share with the public, can be hugely diverse, ranging from announcing a boost in annual profits to making statements regarding news stories which could place the bank in bad repute.
Working externally, it's more important to have an interest, passion, and skill within the PR sector than the finance sector specifically. Your clients are likely to be wider than just banks, and you might be  contracted by the bank to work on a specific project, rather than taking on more generalized work. An example could be if the bank was to merge with another company - it might contract external PR to make regular statements regarding the progress of the merger.
Clearly the one aspect that both roles have in common is that applicants will need to demonstrate strong communication skills, be able to think on the spot, and be able to put a positive spin on news to maintain the bank's reputation. In terms of the skills and qualifications needed to get a foot in the door, investor relations employs those from a wide range of backgrounds. You'll be working amongst those with strong financial backgrounds who have transferred their skills to media relations, and those who trained in journalism and are carving themselves out a career niche.
